Bear Calls: Feeding, Huffs & Cub Distress

Definition: bear calls mimic contented feeding and social contact to reassure wary bears — or cub distress to provoke a sow's protective charge into range. Bears are cautious; the right social sound keeps them feeding instead of melting away.

What bears want to hear

  • Feeding chow: rhythmic contented feeding. The all-around bait sound — one of our most-played bear vocalizations.
  • Contact huff: short social huffs that say all clear to circling bears.
  • Cub distress: bawls that bring sows in fast. Use with caution and a clear shooting lane.
  • Boar growl: low dominance growls that challenge big spring boars.

Why do bears hang up off bait?

Almost always nerves, not disinterest. A bear that circles downwind and leaves smelled you or heard something wrong — usually too much volume. Start feeding loops at 25–35%, keep human scent out of the approach, and let the sound run 20 minutes before last light instead of blasting at dusk.

Spring vs fall

  • Spring: boars roam for sows. Boar growls and cub distress pull traveling bears off their line.
  • Fall: feeding rules. Loop feeding chows over oats, berries and oak flats where bears bulk for winter.
  • Both seasons: hunt evenings. Bears move last light — be settled 3 hours before dark.

Bait-site playbook

  1. Pattern first: bait silent 4–5 nights so bears commit to a schedule.
  2. Add sound: loop feeding chows the final hour before expected arrival.
  3. Stay down: bears look up. Keep stands 12+ feet with background cover.
  4. Rest pressured baits: 2–3 quiet nights after a miss before calling again.

Bear safety with calls

  • Cub distress can bring an aggressive sow fast — hunt it only with a partner and clear lanes.
  • Never call in thick alder without visibility. Sound carries; bears arrive silent.
  • Carry deterrent where required and know your beyond-target zone.
